This morning I came across a post on Facebook that said “Only two people in this world will truly love you unconditionally, one is god and the other is god spelled backwards.” I will agree that most dogs seem to love us unconditionally, however I wouldn’t really call dogs people. I know talk like that could get me in trouble with PETA but I’m not apologizing for it. Aside from the question of whether or not a god is a person, I have to ask if the god this person was referring to exists then how would you define unconditional love? The person who posted this lists her religion as Christian and she seems nice enough but where do Christians get the idea that this god of the new and old testament loves them unconditionally?
The Christian god and most gods for that matter have conditions for their love. If you don’t believe in the invisible man in the sky that refuses to show his existences in any measurable way then you go to a place to be tortured for all eternity. I know the response to this is that we choose hell for ourselves but that is utter bullshit. No one chooses to be tortured unless they have a safe word ready and I’ve heard hell described as a bit more painful than some hot wax and nipple clamps. The questions are simple really once you dismiss the bullshit claim that we send ourselves to hell. Kids don’t send themselves to their rooms to be punished we don’t stop cops and ask them to ticket us for speeding but in this case people are punished for nothing.
The first question is can this god decide not to put people in hell? If not then he isn’t all powerful. The second question is what behavior is deserving of hell? Just being
born in the wrong place and into the wrong religion is enough. Never mind that it’s easy not to believe in something as ridiculous as the bible because this god loves you unconditionally with the conditions that you believe in him and accept the murder of his son as his special gift to you. If that’s love I would hate to be in a relationship with one.
I don’t know what’s more psychotic really that people point to this as unconditional
love or that someone wrote this stuff and thought somehow this was perfect love. How screwed up were things two thousand years ago that this passes for any form of love let alone unconditional love? By this definition unconditional love is one part crazy stalker and one part mafia protection racket. So I must say if you do manage to prove your psychotic god is real, I still wouldn’t worship it.
